Art & Photography
We want to show off the amazing art and photography produced in the department, including audio and video content. If you have paintings, photographs, comic strips, poetry, music, or anything else artsy, we would love to publish it. This can be related to biology and nature, or totally unrelated. Check out previously published issues for examples of what we’re looking for, and please email us with any questions.
Writing
We cover a wide variety of topics, from research to arts and culture. Check out the magazine sections in the About Us tab for a description of the types of content we publish. Keep in mind that this is a multimedia magazine, and we try to incorporate audio and video content into our articles when possible. Articles are normally around 750 words, with some shorter pieces around 500 words, and longer feature articles up to 1000 words. This is not an academic publication, so a more casual writing style is expected. Check out previously published issues for examples of what we’re looking for, and please email us with any questions.
We welcome contributions for the following recurring articles:
Arts & Life
- Book Review: Have a good book to recommend? Write it up for the next issue! (500 words)
- Fieldwork Fail/ Benchwork Bomb: Do you have a funny story of a disaster in the lab or the field? We would love to read it, and it can remain anonymous. (500-750 words)
- Scientific Movie Critique: Have you ever watched a movie that featured or explained a scientific phenomenon and thought...what?! We would love to read your critical scientific review of any film, from Jurassic Park to The Martian. (500-750 words)
