Equity and Solidarity
We stand in solidarity with Black members of our community and the Black Lives Matter movement. We recognize that systemic racism is prevalent in Canadian institutions, including the University of Ottawa. One of our missions is to highlight who we, the uOttawa Department of Biology community, are, both within and outside of academia. This includes the experiences of BIPOC members of our community. BioMatters commits to using our platform to amplify those voices, and to provide a space to discuss the necessary changes to achieve equity for all.
Simultaneously, we acknowledge the inherent sovereignty of the Algonquin Anishinaabe People, upon whose territory our campus resides. Advocating for the return of this land to its traditional caretakers, we honor their sovereignty and seek recognition. As biologists, we understand our interconnectedness with the earth and all its inhabitants—human and nonhuman alike. Our ongoing commitment involves education, responsibility, and stewardship, guided by the wisdom of the land’s original custodians.
